Course Introduction

Women’s meaningful participation in peace and transitional justice processes remains a cornerstone of sustainable conflict resolution and long-term societal stability. This course offers an in-depth exploration of the frameworks, barriers, and opportunities that shape women’s engagement in peacebuilding, emphasizing the critical importance of inclusive processes. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of global standards, legal frameworks, and gender-responsive approaches that enhance women’s voices in decision-making systems.

The course examines how women contribute to conflict prevention, mediation, negotiation, and post-conflict recovery, drawing on real-world experiences from diverse regions affected by political instability or armed conflict. It highlights the unique insights, leadership strengths, and community connections that women bring to peace processes and the transformative impact of their participation on the legitimacy and durability of agreements.

A key component of the course focuses on analyzing the structural, cultural, and political barriers that limit women’s participation in peace and transitional justice efforts. Participants will explore power dynamics, gender norms, and institutional weaknesses that hinder representation and consider evidence-based solutions to overcome these systemic challenges.

The program also emphasizes transitional justice as an essential pathway for healing, accountability, and reconciliation in societies emerging from conflict. By examining mechanisms such as truth commissions, reparations, criminal prosecutions, and institutional reforms, participants will learn how women’s engagement helps ensure that justice processes are inclusive, victim-centered, and aligned with human rights principles.

In addition, the training equips participants with tools for designing gender-responsive peacebuilding strategies that integrate protection, prevention, and participation pillars. Practical sessions will include scenario-based exercises, stakeholder mapping, and conflict analysis models that reinforce applied learning for real-world implementation.

Finally, the course empowers participants to champion women’s leadership in peace and justice sectors by equipping them with policy advocacy techniques, negotiation skills, and strategies for strengthening institutional accountability. By the end of the training, participants will be prepared to influence policy, support women’s networks, and drive transformational change in fragile and post-conflict contexts.
