Course Introduction

Disasters—both natural and human-induced—continue to disproportionately affect vulnerable populations, with women often experiencing heightened risks due to social, economic, and structural inequalities. This course provides a comprehensive framework for strengthening women’s leadership roles in disaster preparedness, response, and emergency coordination systems.

Effective disaster management requires inclusive leadership that integrates diverse perspectives, especially those of women who are often at the frontline of community resilience and recovery. This program explores how women’s leadership can transform disaster risk reduction strategies and improve coordination systems at all levels.

A key focus of the course is understanding disaster risk governance structures and how gender-responsive approaches can enhance preparedness, early warning systems, and emergency response mechanisms. Participants will examine institutional frameworks that support inclusive disaster management.

The program also addresses practical coordination challenges during emergencies, including resource allocation, communication breakdowns, and logistics management. It highlights the importance of leadership skills in ensuring timely and effective response during crisis situations.

In addition, the course explores community-based disaster preparedness strategies that leverage women’s knowledge, networks, and leadership capacities to strengthen resilience and recovery processes in both urban and rural settings.

Ultimately, this course equips participants with the knowledge, leadership skills, and strategic tools required to enhance women’s participation and leadership in disaster preparedness and emergency coordination systems.
