Course Introduction

The transition toward a circular economy is reshaping global development priorities, placing sustainability, resource efficiency, and regenerative business models at the center of economic transformation. Women’s leadership in this space is critical, as inclusive participation ensures that green enterprises reflect diverse perspectives, community needs, and equitable access to economic opportunities. This course equips participants with the knowledge and tools to lead within circular economy ecosystems while advancing gender-responsive sustainability.

Traditional linear economic models—based on extraction, production, consumption, and disposal—are increasingly unsustainable in the face of climate change, resource scarcity, and environmental degradation. The circular economy offers an alternative system that emphasizes reuse, recycling, repair, and regeneration. This course explores how women leaders can drive innovation within green enterprises by embedding circular principles into business strategies, policy frameworks, and community initiatives.

Despite growing recognition of green economies, women remain underrepresented in leadership roles within environmental enterprises, clean technology sectors, and sustainability governance structures. Structural barriers, limited access to finance, and unequal participation in innovation ecosystems continue to restrict their influence. This course addresses these challenges by strengthening leadership capacity and enabling participants to navigate and transform these systems.

Participants will explore how green enterprises can serve as powerful vehicles for inclusive economic growth, particularly in emerging markets and vulnerable communities. The course emphasizes practical pathways for developing sustainable business models that generate environmental impact while empowering women as entrepreneurs, innovators, and decision-makers in circular value chains.

A strong focus is placed on innovation, financing mechanisms, and policy environments that support circular economy transitions. Participants will examine how green entrepreneurship can be scaled through impact investment, blended finance, and ecosystem partnerships. Real-world case studies will demonstrate how women-led initiatives are already reshaping industries such as waste management, renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and eco-design.

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to lead, design, and implement circular economy initiatives that promote environmental sustainability and gender equity simultaneously. They will gain the confidence and strategic insight needed to influence policy, build resilient enterprises, and champion inclusive green transitions in their respective sectors.
