Course Introduction

Women’s Empowerment in Informal Economies and Small Enterprises Course is designed to strengthen the economic agency, productivity, and resilience of women operating in informal sectors and micro-entrepreneurial spaces. The program provides practical strategies for improving income security, business growth, and access to financial and institutional support systems.

Informal economies employ a significant proportion of women in many developing contexts, yet they often operate without legal protection, stable income, or access to formal financial services. This course explores the structural challenges that constrain women’s economic participation and provides tools for transitioning informal activities into sustainable and recognized enterprises.

Participants will examine key areas such as microenterprise development, value addition, financial literacy, market access, cooperative formation, and digital business tools. The course emphasizes practical approaches that enable women entrepreneurs to scale their businesses, improve productivity, and integrate into broader economic systems.

A central focus of the program is strengthening access to finance, including microcredit, savings groups, mobile banking, and gender-responsive financing models. Participants will learn how to navigate financial systems, develop business plans, and engage with financial institutions and development programs that support women-led enterprises.

The course also highlights the importance of policy environments and institutional support in enabling women’s empowerment in informal economies. Participants will analyze regulatory frameworks, social protection systems, and entrepreneurship support structures that influence women’s economic outcomes and resilience.

Ultimately, this course equips participants to design and implement inclusive economic empowerment strategies that enhance women’s livelihoods, strengthen small enterprises, and promote equitable participation in local and national economies.
