Course Introduction

Women’s economic resilience is a critical driver of inclusive growth, poverty reduction, and sustainable development in both rural and urban economies. As global economic systems face increasing shocks from climate change, inflation, conflict, and technological disruption, women are often disproportionately affected due to structural inequalities in access to resources, finance, and markets. This course provides a comprehensive framework for strengthening women’s livelihoods and economic resilience.

Sustainable livelihoods development focuses on enabling individuals and communities to build stable, diversified, and adaptive income-generating activities that can withstand economic and environmental shocks. For many women, livelihoods are often informal, low-income, and vulnerable to disruption. This course explores practical strategies for transitioning toward sustainable, scalable, and resilient livelihood systems.

A key focus of the program is women’s empowerment through access to finance, skills development, entrepreneurship, and market integration. Participants will examine how barriers such as limited credit access, weak property rights, and unequal market participation can be addressed through targeted interventions and supportive policy environments.

The course also explores the role of climate change and environmental sustainability in shaping women’s livelihoods. Many women depend on agriculture, natural resources, and informal trade systems that are highly vulnerable to climate variability. Participants will learn how climate-smart livelihood strategies can enhance resilience and long-term sustainability.

In addition, the program addresses the importance of social protection systems, cooperative models, and community-based economic structures in strengthening women’s resilience. These systems provide safety nets, collective bargaining power, and opportunities for shared growth in challenging economic conditions.

Ultimately, this course equips participants with the knowledge and practical tools required to design and implement programs that strengthen women’s economic resilience, promote sustainable livelihoods, and advance inclusive economic development.
