Course Introduction

Women’s economic empowerment in informal and rural economies is central to achieving inclusive and sustainable development, especially in regions where a significant proportion of women engage in unpaid, underpaid, or vulnerable work. This course provides practical and policy-oriented insights into strengthening women’s economic agency.

Informal and rural economies often operate outside formal regulatory frameworks, limiting women’s access to finance, markets, and social protection systems. This course explores strategies to address these structural barriers and enhance economic opportunities for women in such contexts.

Participants will examine the role of agriculture, small-scale trade, artisanal production, and informal services in sustaining rural livelihoods, with a focus on how women contribute significantly yet remain economically marginalized.

The program highlights innovative approaches to improving women’s access to credit, land, productive resources, and digital financial services, enabling them to transition from subsistence activities to sustainable income-generating enterprises.

It also explores the intersection of gender, poverty, climate vulnerability, and labor informality, offering integrated solutions for strengthening resilience and economic empowerment in rural and informal settings.

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to design and implement inclusive economic empowerment programs that address systemic inequalities affecting women in informal and rural economies.
