Course Introduction

Wetlands are among the most productive and ecologically significant ecosystems on Earth, providing essential services such as water purification, flood regulation, carbon storage, and biodiversity support. This course offers a comprehensive understanding of wetland ecology, conservation principles, and sustainable management strategies.

Globally, wetlands are under severe pressure due to urbanization, agricultural expansion, pollution, and climate change impacts. This course examines these threats in detail while highlighting the urgent need for conservation and restoration interventions to protect these fragile ecosystems.

Participants will explore wetland classification systems, hydrological processes, ecological functions, and habitat dynamics. The course provides practical tools for assessing wetland health and designing effective conservation and rehabilitation programs.

Wetlands also play a critical role in climate change mitigation and adaptation by acting as natural carbon sinks and buffering extreme weather events. This course demonstrates how wetland management contributes to resilience building and sustainable development goals.

Policy and governance frameworks such as the Ramsar Convention guide global wetland conservation efforts. This course explores how international agreements are implemented at national and local levels to ensure effective protection and sustainable use of wetland resources.

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with the technical, scientific, and managerial skills required to conserve, restore, and sustainably manage wetland ecosystems in diverse environmental and socio-economic contexts.
