Course Introduction

Water supply network design is a fundamental area of civil and environmental engineering that ensures communities, industries, commercial developments, and public facilities receive safe, reliable, and efficient water services. Well-designed water distribution systems are essential for public health, economic development, fire protection, and sustainable urban growth. Increasing population growth, urban expansion, climate variability, aging infrastructure, and rising demand for efficient water management have created the need for skilled professionals capable of planning, designing, analyzing, and managing modern water supply networks. This comprehensive training course equips participants with the practical knowledge and technical skills required to develop reliable water distribution systems that meet current and future demands.

The course provides participants with a detailed understanding of water demand assessment, network planning, hydraulic principles, pipe sizing, pressure management, storage systems, pumping requirements, distribution layouts, leakage control, water quality considerations, and operational strategies. Participants will learn how to analyze water supply requirements, perform hydraulic calculations, evaluate network performance, select suitable components, and develop effective design solutions. Practical exercises, engineering examples, and real-world water infrastructure case studies enhance participants’ ability to address challenges associated with water supply system planning and implementation.

Modern water supply network design increasingly incorporates advanced digital technologies including Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Building Information Modeling (BIM), hydraulic modelling software, smart water meters, artificial intelligence, machine learning, Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, digital twins, and automated asset management platforms. This course explores these emerging technologies and demonstrates how digital solutions improve network analysis, leak detection, demand forecasting, operational monitoring, maintenance planning, and lifecycle management of water infrastructure.

Participants will develop practical competencies in water distribution planning, hydraulic analysis, network modelling, pipe system design, pump and storage evaluation, pressure control, water loss management, construction supervision, inspection procedures, and technical reporting. The course emphasizes internationally recognized water engineering standards, public health requirements, sustainability principles, environmental protection practices, and quality assurance procedures that support safe and efficient water supply infrastructure.

The training further examines regulatory, environmental, sustainability, and operational considerations associated with water supply projects. Participants will understand water quality regulations, construction requirements, resource conservation strategies, infrastructure maintenance needs, stakeholder coordination practices, and risk management approaches while learning practical methods for improving system reliability, reducing water losses, optimizing energy use, and enhancing long-term service delivery.

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will possess the expertise to support water supply network design activities, perform hydraulic assessments, evaluate distribution system performance, develop improvement strategies, and contribute effectively to water infrastructure projects. These competencies enable organizations to improve water security, optimize infrastructure investments, strengthen operational efficiency, and successfully deliver sustainable and resilient water supply systems.
