Course Introduction

Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) are fundamental pillars of humanitarian response in crises. In emergencies such as natural disasters, armed conflicts, or disease outbreaks, access to clean water, safe sanitation, and proper hygiene practices can mean the difference between life and death. This course provides an in-depth understanding of WASH interventions and their critical role in safeguarding health and dignity during humanitarian crises.

Participants will explore the technical, operational, and strategic aspects of implementing WASH programs in emergency contexts. From water supply systems to sanitation infrastructure and hygiene promotion, the course integrates evidence-based approaches with innovative practices tailored to challenging environments.

A key focus of the course is linking WASH interventions with broader humanitarian objectives. By examining how WASH reduces disease transmission, supports nutrition, protects vulnerable groups, and enhances overall resilience, learners will gain a systems-level appreciation of WASH as an essential humanitarian service.

The training also emphasizes risk-informed approaches, ensuring participants understand how to anticipate, prevent, and respond to WASH-related risks in complex and dynamic crises. Emerging issues such as climate change impacts on water availability, urban emergencies, and the role of technology in improving service delivery will be addressed.

Through interactive learning methods, including case studies, simulations, and group exercises, participants will develop practical skills for designing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating WASH interventions in humanitarian operations. They will also learn how to collaborate effectively with governments, NGOs, communities, and international organizations to maximize impact.

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with advanced knowledge, skills, and tools to deliver safe and effective WASH responses that save lives, protect dignity, and promote resilience in humanitarian crises.
