Course Introduction

Ensuring the safety of drinking water requires a proactive and preventive approach rooted in science, governance, and sustainability. The Water Safety Planning and Risk-Based Management Training Course equips participants with the knowledge and practical tools needed to design, implement, and maintain comprehensive water safety plans (WSPs) in line with World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines.

This course introduces participants to the principles and frameworks of risk-based water management, focusing on the identification, assessment, and control of potential hazards from catchment to consumer. It emphasizes the importance of integrated planning and continuous improvement to protect public health while ensuring compliance with international standards.

Participants will explore case studies from successful WSP implementations across diverse contexts ranging from rural water supply systems to large-scale urban utilities. They will learn how to apply preventive risk assessment techniques, develop operational monitoring programs, and build robust verification mechanisms to ensure consistent water quality.

With growing challenges from climate change, industrial pollution, and infrastructure aging, the course incorporates emerging trends such as digital monitoring, sensor-based data collection, and predictive analytics for water safety management. It also emphasizes adaptive planning for climate resilience and disaster preparedness in water service delivery.

The training adopts a hands-on, interactive approach combining technical instruction, group exercises, and scenario-based simulations. Participants will develop customized WSPs for their own organizations, integrating technical, managerial, and regulatory elements for effective implementation.

By the end of the course, learners will be fully equipped to lead water safety initiatives, strengthen institutional capacity, and embed risk-based management systems that safeguard communities and ensure sustainable access to clean water.
