Course Introduction

Water resource economics plays a critical role in shaping how societies allocate, value, and manage increasingly scarce freshwater resources. This course provides an advanced understanding of economic principles applied to water systems and their integration with environmental sustainability objectives in both public and private sectors.

The program introduces participants to the economic valuation of water resources, including pricing mechanisms, cost-benefit analysis, and demand management strategies. It highlights how economic tools influence water conservation, allocation efficiency, and investment decisions in water infrastructure development.

Participants will explore the relationship between water economics and environmental sustainability, focusing on how economic incentives can promote responsible water use and ecosystem protection. The course emphasizes balancing economic growth with environmental conservation goals.

A strong focus is placed on policy instruments such as water tariffs, subsidies, market-based mechanisms, and regulatory frameworks. Learners will understand how these tools are designed and implemented to ensure equitable and sustainable water resource distribution.

The course also addresses emerging challenges such as water scarcity, climate change impacts, population growth, and competing sectoral demands. It provides analytical tools to evaluate economic trade-offs and support evidence-based water governance decisions.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to apply economic analysis to water resource management, design sustainable pricing systems, and contribute to policies that ensure long-term environmental and economic sustainability.
