Course Introduction

Water governance faces growing challenges as population growth, urbanization, and climate change increase demand while exacerbating inequalities. This course equips participants with practical knowledge to address water justice, equity, and social inclusion in policy-making, planning, and implementation, ensuring sustainable and equitable water management.

Participants will explore frameworks and strategies for inclusive water governance, emphasizing marginalized and vulnerable populations. The course highlights participatory approaches that integrate gender, socio-economic status, and cultural considerations into decision-making processes, ensuring fair access and resource distribution.

The program emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, combining policy, social science, and technical water management tools. Participants learn to evaluate governance structures, monitor equity outcomes, and implement strategies that promote transparency, accountability, and stakeholder engagement in water resources management.

Emerging issues such as climate-induced water stress, digital inclusion, and community-led resource monitoring are explored. Participants gain skills to design interventions that address systemic inequities and promote adaptive, resilient, and socially just water governance systems.

Case studies from diverse global contexts illustrate challenges and successes in promoting water justice. Participants examine how policy reforms, participatory platforms, and innovative financing can address inequities in urban, rural, and transboundary water governance contexts.

Through scenario planning, stakeholder mapping, and participatory exercises, participants acquire practical skills to assess, design, and implement water governance interventions that advance equity, social inclusion, and sustainability. By the end of the course, they will be ready to drive transformative governance reforms.
