Course Introduction

Water utilities and water service providers depend on accurate billing and effective revenue collection to sustain operations, maintain infrastructure, improve service delivery, and support long-term financial viability. Data analytics provides practical methods for transforming customer, meter, consumption, billing, payment, and revenue data into actionable intelligence. This course equips participants with the analytical capabilities required to identify revenue leakage, improve billing accuracy, strengthen collection performance, and support evidence-based water revenue management.

Effective water billing begins with reliable customer and meter information, accurate consumption records, appropriate tariffs, and well-controlled billing processes. Participants will examine how customer databases, meter-reading records, billing systems, payment platforms, tariff structures, service connections, and account histories can be integrated and analyzed. Particular attention will be given to data quality problems such as duplicate accounts, inactive connections, estimated readings, abnormal consumption, incorrect classifications, missing meter readings, billing exceptions, and inconsistent customer information.

The course also focuses on operational analytics across the complete water revenue cycle, from customer registration and meter reading through bill generation, invoicing, payment, arrears management, disconnections, reconnections, and revenue reconciliation. Participants will learn how to analyze billing efficiency, collection rates, outstanding balances, payment behaviour, ageing profiles, customer segmentation, consumption patterns, and collection performance. These capabilities help organizations identify operational bottlenecks and prioritize interventions using measurable evidence.

Revenue analytics is particularly important where water providers face non-revenue water, unauthorized consumption, inaccurate metering, delayed payments, weak collection processes, tariff challenges, and growing customer service expectations. The course introduces dashboards, key performance indicators, exception reports, trend analysis, geographic analysis, and predictive approaches that can help management monitor revenue performance. Participants will learn how to translate analytical findings into practical actions for improving billing completeness, collection effectiveness, account management, and financial controls.

Emerging technologies are increasingly transforming water revenue management through automated meter reading, advanced metering infrastructure, mobile payment platforms, Internet of Things technologies, geospatial systems, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cloud-based analytics, and automated anomaly detection. The course explores how these technologies can support consumption forecasting, meter anomaly identification, payment prediction, customer segmentation, revenue assurance, and operational decision-making while also addressing data governance, privacy, cybersecurity, transparency, and responsible use of automated analytics.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to apply practical analytical techniques to water billing and revenue collection challenges, develop meaningful performance indicators, investigate revenue anomalies, interpret customer and payment trends, and produce decision-ready reports and dashboards. The programme is designed to strengthen both technical analytical capability and managerial decision support, enabling organizations to use their existing revenue data more effectively to improve financial performance and water service sustainability.
