Course Introduction

Veterinary public health plays a critical role in safeguarding both animal and human populations by preventing, controlling, and managing zoonotic diseases and foodborne hazards originating from livestock systems. As global demand for animal-source foods increases, the risks associated with infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and unsafe food production systems continue to grow. This course equips participants with the knowledge and practical competencies required to strengthen veterinary public health systems and ensure safe, sustainable livestock production.

The interface between animal health, human health, and environmental health—commonly referred to as the One Health approach—is central to modern veterinary public health practice. Livestock production systems are key contributors to livelihoods, nutrition, and economic development, but they can also serve as sources of disease transmission if not properly managed. Participants will explore integrated approaches to disease surveillance, outbreak prevention, and risk reduction across livestock value chains.

Zoonotic diseases such as rabies, brucellosis, avian influenza, anthrax, and tuberculosis remain major public health concerns globally. In addition, emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases continue to challenge veterinary and public health systems. This training provides in-depth knowledge on disease epidemiology, transmission dynamics, surveillance systems, and emergency preparedness strategies necessary for effective disease control and prevention in livestock systems.

Food safety is a key pillar of veterinary public health, particularly in livestock-derived food production chains such as meat, milk, eggs, and poultry products. Poor hygiene, inadequate inspection systems, and weak regulatory frameworks contribute to food contamination and public health risks. Participants will learn food safety principles, inspection protocols, hazard analysis systems, and quality assurance mechanisms that ensure safe food production and distribution.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the most pressing global health challenges linked to livestock production systems. The misuse and overuse of antibiotics in animals contribute to resistant pathogens that threaten both animal and human health. This course addresses antimicrobial stewardship, responsible drug use, and regulatory frameworks aimed at reducing AMR while maintaining animal productivity and welfare.

By the end of this training, participants will be able to design and implement effective veterinary public health interventions, strengthen disease surveillance systems, improve food safety standards, and contribute to integrated One Health strategies. The course combines scientific principles with practical applications to enhance public health protection and sustainable livestock system management.
