Course Introduction

Urban humanitarian response is becoming increasingly critical as global crises shift from rural to densely populated urban environments. This course provides participants with a deep understanding of how humanitarian actors can effectively operate in complex urban settings and informal settlements.

The program explores the unique challenges of urban crises, including high population density, fragile infrastructure, tenure insecurity, and complex governance systems. Participants will learn how these factors influence vulnerability, access to services, and humanitarian response delivery.

A strong emphasis is placed on informal settlements, where millions of crisis-affected people reside without adequate housing, sanitation, or protection. The course examines how to design inclusive, context-sensitive interventions that address both immediate needs and long-term urban resilience.

Participants will also examine coordination challenges in urban environments, where multiple actors including municipalities, NGOs, private sector entities, and community groups operate simultaneously. Effective coordination mechanisms are essential for avoiding duplication and ensuring efficiency.

The course integrates tools and approaches such as urban profiling, spatial mapping, and neighborhood-based assessments. These methodologies help practitioners understand urban systems and design interventions that are both targeted and scalable.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to design, implement, and evaluate humanitarian programs in urban and informal settlement contexts that are inclusive, adaptive, and sustainable.
