Course Introduction

Urban drainage design and flood-control management are essential components of sustainable city development, ensuring communities remain protected from flooding, waterlogging, infrastructure damage, and environmental degradation. Rapid urbanization, climate change, increased impervious surfaces, and extreme rainfall events have intensified the need for effective stormwater management systems that can safely collect, convey, store, and discharge excess water. Properly designed drainage networks reduce flood risks, protect public infrastructure, improve urban resilience, and support healthy living environments. This comprehensive training course equips participants with the practical knowledge and technical skills required to plan, design, manage, and maintain urban drainage and flood-control systems using modern engineering principles.

The course provides participants with a detailed understanding of urban hydrology, stormwater management principles, drainage network planning, hydraulic analysis, flood modelling, drainage structures, detention and retention systems, sustainable urban drainage systems (SuDS), and maintenance strategies. Participants will learn how to assess rainfall patterns, estimate runoff, design drainage components, evaluate flood risks, develop mitigation strategies, and implement effective water management solutions. Practical exercises, engineering examples, and real-world urban flood case studies enhance participants’ ability to address complex drainage challenges in rapidly developing cities.

As urban water management advances through digital transformation, drainage design and flood-control planning increasingly incorporate Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Building Information Modeling (BIM), remote sensing, drones, artificial intelligence, machine learning, Internet of Things (IoT) monitoring systems, digital twins, and advanced hydrological modelling platforms. This course explores these emerging technologies and demonstrates how digital tools improve flood prediction, drainage network analysis, infrastructure planning, real-time monitoring, emergency response, and long-term urban resilience strategies.

Participants will develop practical competencies in catchment analysis, stormwater calculations, hydraulic modelling, drainage design, flood-risk assessment, sustainable drainage planning, construction supervision, inspection procedures, maintenance management, and engineering documentation. The course emphasizes internationally recognized drainage standards, climate adaptation strategies, environmental protection requirements, occupational health and safety practices, and sustainable water management approaches that support resilient urban infrastructure.

The training further examines contractual, environmental, sustainability, and occupational health and safety considerations associated with urban drainage and flood-control projects. Participants will understand regulatory requirements, environmental impact management, water conservation principles, construction quality control, stakeholder coordination, and risk management approaches while learning practical methods for reducing flood impacts, protecting communities, improving drainage efficiency, and enhancing climate resilience.

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will possess the expertise to support urban drainage planning, evaluate flood risks, develop stormwater management strategies, supervise drainage projects, and implement sustainable flood-control solutions. These competencies enable organizations and municipalities to improve urban resilience, reduce flood damage, optimize infrastructure investments, strengthen environmental performance, and successfully deliver reliable water management systems.
