Course Introduction
Urban areas around the world are experiencing rapid population growth, increasing pressure on natural resources, declining green spaces, and rising concerns regarding food security and environmental sustainability. Urban agriculture and green infrastructure have emerged as essential components of modern city planning strategies that promote resilience, biodiversity, public health, and sustainable economic growth. This course provides participants with advanced knowledge and practical tools for integrating food production systems and ecological infrastructure into urban planning processes that support healthier and more sustainable cities.
Urban agriculture is increasingly recognized as more than a food production activity. It contributes to climate adaptation, community development, stormwater management, biodiversity enhancement, and environmental conservation within densely populated urban environments. Community gardens, rooftop farms, vertical agriculture systems, green corridors, edible landscapes, and urban forests are transforming cities into productive and resilient ecosystems. Participants will explore how these initiatives support sustainable urban development objectives while improving quality of life for residents.
The course provides extensive coverage of urban planning methodologies and policy frameworks that facilitate successful implementation of urban agriculture and green infrastructure initiatives. Participants will examine land use planning principles, zoning regulations, environmental impact assessments, stakeholder engagement processes, and governance arrangements that support integrated urban development while balancing social, environmental, and economic priorities effectively and sustainably.
Special emphasis is placed on climate resilience and ecosystem-based adaptation strategies that utilize nature-based solutions to address urban environmental challenges. Participants will gain practical understanding of how green infrastructure improves air quality, mitigates urban heat island effects, manages stormwater runoff, supports biodiversity conservation, and strengthens resilience against climate-related risks and extreme weather events affecting modern cities.
Emerging technologies including geographic information systems, remote sensing technologies, environmental monitoring systems, digital twins, smart city platforms, artificial intelligence applications, and advanced data analytics are transforming urban planning and environmental management globally. Participants will evaluate how these technologies improve planning accuracy, optimize resource allocation, support evidence-based decision-making, and strengthen sustainability outcomes across urban environments.
Upon completion of the course, participants will possess the expertise required to design, implement, and manage urban agriculture and green infrastructure projects that improve food security, environmental sustainability, and climate resilience. They will be equipped to lead initiatives that restore ecosystems, strengthen community participation, create green employment opportunities, and support the development of healthier and more sustainable urban environments.
