Course Introduction

University Institutional Research and Academic Analytics Training Course provides higher education professionals with practical knowledge and analytical capabilities for transforming institutional data into evidence that supports strategic planning, academic quality, student success, resource management, and institutional decision-making. The course focuses on developing a systematic understanding of how universities can collect, integrate, analyse, interpret, and communicate data across academic and administrative functions.

The programme examines the major sources of university data, including student information systems, admissions records, academic performance data, enrolment statistics, graduation records, student engagement information, staffing data, finance, research activity, graduate outcomes, institutional surveys, and quality assurance records. Participants learn how to bring these diverse data sources together to develop coherent institutional intelligence and answer important questions about university performance and effectiveness.

A central component of the course is the application of academic analytics to student recruitment, progression, retention, completion, academic achievement, and graduate outcomes. Participants explore how analytical methods can identify patterns and performance gaps across programmes, faculties, departments, student groups, and academic cohorts, while supporting early identification of emerging challenges and informing targeted interventions.

The course also develops practical capabilities in institutional dashboards, performance indicators, benchmarking, data visualization, and analytical reporting. Participants learn how to design useful measures of institutional performance and present findings through clear dashboards, scorecards, reports, and data stories that can support university councils, senior management, academic leaders, quality assurance teams, and other stakeholders.

University analytics increasingly involves complex considerations around data governance, privacy, interoperability, responsible AI, and ethical use of student information. Participants therefore examine approaches for maintaining data quality, protecting sensitive institutional and student information, addressing analytical bias, establishing appropriate access controls, and using predictive or automated analytics responsibly within higher education environments.

By the end of the programme, participants will be equipped to strengthen institutional research functions, develop practical academic analytics frameworks, interpret higher education performance data, and translate evidence into strategic and operational decisions. The course connects analytical techniques with real institutional priorities, enabling universities to build stronger data cultures, improve academic performance monitoring, and support continuous institutional improvement.
