Course Introduction

Traffic Data Analytics and Road Safety Intelligence Training Course provides a comprehensive framework for transforming traffic, roadway, crash, mobility, vehicle, driver, and infrastructure data into actionable intelligence for road safety management. The course is designed for transport authorities, road agencies, traffic management organizations, police and enforcement agencies, municipalities, infrastructure planners, public-sector analysts, consultants, researchers, and road safety professionals who need stronger analytical capabilities for identifying risks, understanding crash patterns, monitoring traffic conditions, and supporting evidence-based safety interventions.

Modern road safety management depends on more than simply counting crashes. Effective intelligence requires the integration of crash records with roadway characteristics, traffic volumes, vehicle information, driver behavior, injury outcomes, enforcement activity, travel patterns, speed information, and other exposure measures. NHTSA identifies crash, driver, vehicle, roadway, citation and adjudication, and injury-surveillance systems as important components of traffic records, with emphasis on timeliness, accuracy, completeness, uniformity, integration, and accessibility. This course therefore develops practical capabilities for building analytical datasets that provide a more complete understanding of road safety conditions.

A major focus is crash data analytics and safety problem identification. Participants learn how to analyze crash frequency, severity, location, time, road-user type, vehicle involvement, environmental conditions, roadway characteristics, and contributing factors. They examine how data quality, coding consistency, geographic referencing, missing information, and differences in reporting practices can affect analytical conclusions. WHO guidance emphasizes that road safety data must be properly coded, processed, analyzed, disseminated, and used to identify problems, formulate strategies, set targets, and monitor progress. Participants therefore learn both the technical and management dimensions of road safety analytics.

The training also develops advanced traffic and roadway intelligence capabilities. Participants examine traffic volumes, speeds, congestion, intersection activity, pedestrian and cyclist exposure, road geometry, access characteristics, infrastructure conditions, and other roadway attributes alongside crash information. FHWA's Highway Safety Information System demonstrates how crash, roadway, and traffic variables can be brought together for safety analysis and predictive modeling, while its Roadway Safety Data Program highlights the importance of standardized roadway inventory elements and quantitative safety analysis. These principles are translated into practical analytical methods for identifying high-risk locations and understanding the relationship between exposure, infrastructure, and safety outcomes.

The course further addresses geographic intelligence, risk analysis, predictive safety analytics, and performance monitoring. Participants learn how to map crash concentrations, identify high-risk corridors and intersections, analyze vulnerable road-user exposure, examine temporal and spatial trends, and develop dashboards for safety performance management. FHWA safety dashboards illustrate how crash datasets can be queried by multiple crash, vehicle, person, driver, pedestrian, and cyclist variables and presented through maps, tables, and charts. Participants use similar analytical concepts to create management-ready safety intelligence that supports prioritization, monitoring, investigation, and communication.

The final stage integrates these capabilities through a practical Traffic Data Analytics and Road Safety Intelligence project. Participants combine crash, roadway, traffic, exposure, infrastructure, and contextual datasets to identify safety patterns, investigate contributing factors, develop risk indicators, and produce executive-ready dashboards and recommendations. The course emphasizes measurable analysis, transparent assumptions, data quality, appropriate interpretation, and evidence-based decision support. By completing the program, participants will be equipped to turn complex traffic datasets into practical intelligence for safer road networks, better investment decisions, targeted interventions, and continuous road safety performance management.
