Course Introduction

Tea is one of the world’s most widely consumed beverages and a major agricultural commodity that supports the livelihoods of millions of farmers, workers, processors, and traders across producing countries. The tea sector contributes significantly to employment generation, foreign exchange earnings, rural development, and economic growth. However, tea producers increasingly face challenges related to climate change, declining soil fertility, labor shortages, fluctuating market prices, and rising sustainability requirements from international buyers. This Tea Farming and Sustainable Value Chains Training Course equips participants with practical and strategic knowledge to improve tea productivity, quality, sustainability, and competitiveness.

The course provides a comprehensive understanding of tea production systems, from site selection and nursery establishment to plantation management and harvesting. Participants will learn modern agronomic practices that enhance tea yields while preserving environmental resources and maintaining long-term farm productivity. Emphasis is placed on selecting appropriate tea varieties, implementing effective field management practices, and optimizing production systems to meet growing domestic and international demand for high-quality tea products.

A critical component of the course focuses on sustainable land management, soil fertility improvement, and climate-smart tea farming practices. Participants will explore techniques for soil conservation, nutrient management, water resource optimization, agroforestry integration, and biodiversity protection. These approaches help tea producers adapt to changing climatic conditions while improving resilience, productivity, and environmental stewardship across tea-growing landscapes.

The training also examines integrated pest and disease management strategies that support healthy tea plantations and reduce production losses. Participants will gain practical knowledge on identifying key pests and diseases affecting tea crops, implementing preventive measures, and applying sustainable control techniques. Integrated management approaches are emphasized to minimize chemical dependency while ensuring effective crop protection and compliance with sustainability standards.

Beyond production, the course addresses tea processing, quality management, certification systems, and value chain development. Participants will learn how harvesting practices, processing techniques, traceability systems, and quality assurance measures influence product value and market access. The course also explores sustainability certifications, ethical sourcing requirements, and specialty tea markets that offer opportunities for increased profitability and competitive advantage.

By the end of the training, participants will possess the skills and knowledge required to improve tea farming operations, strengthen value chain performance, enhance product quality, and increase market opportunities. They will be equipped to implement sustainable production systems, meet evolving consumer expectations, and contribute to resilient and inclusive tea sector development that benefits producers, businesses, and communities alike.
