Introduction

In traditional linear monitoring and evaluation (M&E) frameworks often fell short of capturing the interconnected realities of complex systems. The Systems Thinking and Complexity Science in M&E Design Training Course introduces participants to a transformative approach that embraces nonlinearity, feedback loops, and dynamic interactions within programs and interventions. This paradigm shift allows practitioners to design M&E systems that are adaptive, context-sensitive, and better aligned with real-world conditions.

The course provides a comprehensive understanding of systems thinking principles and how they can be applied to improve evaluation design and learning. Participants will explore the use of complexity science to analyze relationships among system components and understand how interventions influence and are influenced by emerging patterns. By leveraging these frameworks, M&E professionals can enhance their capacity to interpret change processes more effectively and strategically.

Participants will gain exposure to cutting-edge M&E methodologies that go beyond conventional tools, focusing on how complexity-informed approaches foster innovation, resilience, and sustainability. The course bridges theory and practice by integrating case studies, participatory exercises, and systems mapping techniques to enhance practical understanding and application.

Furthermore, the training underscores the importance of adaptive management, feedback mechanisms, and real-time learning to ensure that programs remain relevant in dynamic environments. Participants will learn how to design evaluation systems that evolve alongside the interventions they assess, allowing for continuous improvement and more meaningful impact measurement.

Emphasis will also be placed on the ethical and strategic dimensions of systems thinking; how power dynamics, stakeholder diversity, and systemic barriers influence decision-making and evaluation outcomes. By addressing these dimensions, participants will learn to design M&E systems that promote equity, inclusivity, and systemic transformation.

Ultimately, this five-day course equips M&E professionals, policymakers, and development practitioners with the conceptual frameworks and practical tools necessary to evaluate complexity, adaptively manage change, and support evidence-based decision-making for transformative development outcomes.
