Course Introduction

Synthetic Population and Survey Data Modeling Training Course provides an advanced and practical foundation for designing, generating, validating, and analyzing synthetic populations and survey datasets for research, planning, simulation, policy analysis, market studies, public services, and decision-support applications. Synthetic populations provide a powerful way to construct statistically representative populations without exposing individual-level records, while synthetic survey data can support experimentation, scenario analysis, methodological development, and analytical prototyping. This course examines the principles, computational methods, data engineering practices, validation frameworks, and responsible-use considerations required to build credible synthetic population and survey models.

The course begins with the foundations of population synthesis and survey data modeling, including population structures, household relationships, demographic characteristics, geographic distributions, sampling frameworks, survey instruments, weighting, nonresponse, and complex dependencies among variables. Participants will examine how aggregate statistics, administrative data, census information, survey microdata, and other sources can be combined to construct synthetic individuals, households, organizations, or other population units. Particular attention is given to preserving important marginal distributions, joint relationships, geographical patterns, household structures, and behavioral characteristics without reproducing identifiable source records.

Advanced computational approaches are explored throughout the program, including iterative proportional fitting, iterative proportional updating, combinatorial optimization, probabilistic graphical models, Bayesian methods, copulas, microsimulation, agent-based modeling, machine learning, generative adversarial networks, variational methods, diffusion models, and modern generative AI approaches. Participants will learn how to select and combine methods according to population characteristics, survey structure, available constraints, computational requirements, and analytical objectives. The course also examines how population synthesis can incorporate spatial, temporal, demographic, socioeconomic, behavioral, and contextual dimensions to support realistic simulations.

A major focus is placed on survey data modeling and the preservation of analytical relationships. Participants will explore synthetic survey generation for cross-sectional, longitudinal, panel, household, establishment, health, socioeconomic, consumer, and behavioral research. They will learn how to model sampling designs, weights, stratification, clustering, nonresponse, missing values, response patterns, item relationships, and complex survey structures. Validation approaches will assess whether synthetic survey datasets reproduce the characteristics required for meaningful analysis, including distributions, correlations, regression relationships, subgroup patterns, estimates, and uncertainty.

The course also addresses validation, privacy, bias, and representativeness in synthetic population and survey modeling. Participants will learn to evaluate whether generated populations preserve demographic and geographic distributions, household composition, rare groups, dependency structures, and important analytical relationships. They will investigate disclosure risks, record similarity, membership inference, uniqueness, and unintended reproduction of source information. The program also examines how source-data limitations, model assumptions, undercoverage, nonresponse, sampling bias, and generation techniques can affect synthetic populations and potentially produce misleading analytical results.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to design end-to-end synthetic population and survey data workflows, integrate multiple source datasets, select appropriate generation techniques, construct realistic synthetic populations, model survey responses, validate statistical and analytical fidelity, assess privacy and bias, and document model assumptions and limitations. They will also understand emerging developments such as AI-generated synthetic populations, spatially enabled population synthesis, multimodal survey modeling, digital twins, agent-based simulation, privacy-preserving population models, and automated synthetic-data validation. The course provides the skills required to use synthetic population and survey data responsibly across research, planning, analytics, simulation, and decision-support environments.
