Course Introduction
Synthetic Data Generation for Analytics and Research Training Course provides researchers, data analysts, and professionals with practical knowledge for creating artificial datasets that reproduce important characteristics of real-world data. Participants will explore how synthetic data can support research, analytics, testing, modelling, simulation, and experimentation while reducing dependence on sensitive or restricted datasets.
The course introduces the foundations of synthetic data generation, including statistical simulation, probability distributions, sampling methods, generative models, and artificial data design. Participants will learn how to determine which characteristics of an original dataset should be preserved and how different generation techniques can be selected according to analytical objectives, data structures, and research requirements.
Modern artificial intelligence has expanded synthetic data capabilities through machine learning, generative adversarial networks, variational autoencoders, diffusion models, and large generative models. Participants will examine these technologies alongside traditional statistical approaches, gaining an understanding of how different methods generate synthetic tabular, textual, image, time-series, and other structured or unstructured datasets.
A major focus of the programme is evaluating whether synthetic datasets are useful and trustworthy for their intended purpose. Participants will explore statistical similarity, distributional comparisons, correlation structures, utility testing, model performance, privacy risks, disclosure risks, and other validation approaches. They will learn why a synthetic dataset should be evaluated according to both its analytical usefulness and its potential privacy implications.
The course also addresses responsible synthetic data practices, including privacy preservation, re-identification risks, bias propagation, representativeness, fairness, data governance, and regulatory considerations. Participants will examine how synthetic data can reduce some exposure to sensitive information while recognising that generation processes can reproduce or amplify characteristics and biases present in source datasets.
By completing the Synthetic Data Generation for Analytics and Research Training Course, participants will be able to design, generate, evaluate, and document synthetic datasets for practical analytics and research applications. The course connects statistical methods with modern AI-based generation techniques, enabling participants to make informed methodological choices and establish responsible synthetic data workflows.
