Course Introduction
Synthetic content is becoming a routine part of modern communication as organisations use generative AI to create text, images, audio, video and other digital materials. While these technologies can improve efficiency and creativity, undisclosed synthetic content can create uncertainty about authenticity, authorship and intent. This course provides communication professionals with practical frameworks for deciding when and how AI-generated or AI-assisted content should be disclosed.
Transparency is increasingly important to maintaining trust in an environment where audiences cannot always distinguish between human-created and machine-generated material. An AI-generated executive image, synthetic voice, automated article or digitally altered video may be technically convincing while still creating reputational risks if its origin is unclear. Participants examine the relationship between disclosure, credibility, audience expectations, organisational reputation and responsible communication.
The programme explores practical approaches for identifying synthetic content and establishing appropriate disclosure processes across corporate websites, social media, marketing materials, public statements, internal communication and multimedia campaigns. Participants examine content provenance, labelling, metadata, watermarking, authenticity signals and AI-assisted verification techniques. The emphasis is on creating disclosure practices that are understandable, consistent and proportionate rather than relying solely on technical terminology.
Participants also learn how to develop decision frameworks for determining whether AI involvement is material enough to require disclosure. The course considers different levels of AI participation, ranging from editing and enhancement to substantial generation or synthetic representation. Participants assess factors such as audience expectations, potential for deception, public interest, reputational sensitivity, legal and regulatory considerations, and whether the content could reasonably be mistaken for an authentic recording or statement.
Emerging challenges are addressed throughout the programme, including deepfakes, AI voice cloning, synthetic influencers, virtual representatives, AI-generated testimonials, fabricated imagery, automated journalism, synthetic reviews and increasingly autonomous agentic content production. Participants explore how unclear or inconsistent disclosure can contribute to misinformation, manipulated narratives and declining confidence in digital communication, while excessive or poorly designed disclosure can also create confusion or unnecessary barriers to effective communication.
By completing the course, participants will be equipped to establish practical synthetic content disclosure and transparency frameworks within their organisations. They will be able to assess AI-generated material, develop appropriate labelling standards, communicate AI involvement clearly, manage stakeholder expectations and support responsible governance. These capabilities enable organisations to benefit from generative AI while maintaining credibility, accountability and informed relationships with audiences.
