Course Introduction

Urban transport is a vital enabler of economic growth, social mobility, and inclusive development. However, in many cities, transport systems remain inequitable, inaccessible, and environmentally unsustainable, disproportionately affecting vulnerable groups such as women, youth, the elderly, and persons with disabilities. Addressing these gaps is essential for achieving sustainable urban development.

This course provides an in-depth exploration of sustainable urban transport systems and their intersection with social inclusion. It emphasizes the role of transport not only as infrastructure but also as a driver of equity, access, and opportunity in cities.

Participants will engage with critical themes such as mobility justice, inclusive design, climate-smart transport policies, and the use of technology and innovation in improving urban mobility. The course highlights best practices from global case studies while encouraging context-specific solutions for diverse urban realities.

Special attention will be given to the challenges of rapid urbanization, congestion, air pollution, and informal transport systems, and their implications for both environmental sustainability and social equity. Tools for designing policies and interventions that balance efficiency, affordability, accessibility, and inclusiveness will be introduced.

The course also explores the importance of engaging citizens, communities, and marginalized groups in the co-creation of transport solutions to ensure that urban mobility systems respond to diverse needs. This approach ensures inclusivity while strengthening governance and accountability in transport planning.

By the end of the program, participants will have the skills to integrate sustainability and inclusiveness into urban transport systems, design equitable mobility policies, and champion solutions that make cities safer, greener, and more accessible for all.
