Course Introduction

Rapid urbanization, population growth, and increasing food demand are creating significant pressure on conventional agricultural systems and supply chains globally. Urban livestock and poultry farming have emerged as practical solutions for improving food security, increasing household incomes, creating employment opportunities, and reducing dependency on distant food production systems. This course provides participants with practical knowledge and technical expertise required to establish and manage sustainable livestock and poultry enterprises within urban and peri-urban environments while maintaining environmental responsibility and public health standards.

Urban livestock production contributes significantly to the availability of nutritious food products such as meat, eggs, milk, and other animal-based products that support household nutrition and local economic development. However, successful urban farming requires careful planning, proper resource management, effective waste disposal systems, and compliance with environmental regulations. Participants will explore strategies for balancing productivity with sustainability and community well-being objectives.

The course provides extensive coverage of livestock and poultry production systems suitable for urban environments, including small ruminants, dairy animals, broilers, layers, indigenous poultry, rabbits, and integrated mixed farming systems. Participants will gain practical understanding of housing design, nutrition management, breeding programs, disease prevention measures, and productivity improvement strategies that support efficient and profitable operations.

Special attention is given to environmental conservation and sustainable resource utilization practices that minimize pollution and maximize efficiency within urban farming systems. Participants will examine manure management systems, waste recycling technologies, renewable energy applications, water conservation techniques, and circular economy approaches that strengthen sustainability while reducing environmental footprints and operational costs.

Emerging technologies such as precision livestock farming, smart feeding systems, automated environmental controls, digital health monitoring, artificial intelligence applications, and Internet of Things solutions are transforming livestock management globally. Participants will evaluate how these technologies improve productivity, animal welfare, disease detection, decision-making, and operational efficiency within modern urban livestock enterprises.

By the end of the course, participants will possess the expertise required to establish, manage, and expand sustainable urban livestock and poultry enterprises successfully. They will be equipped to improve food security, strengthen climate resilience, create employment opportunities, increase profitability, and contribute to sustainable urban development while maintaining responsible environmental stewardship and animal welfare standards.
