Course Introduction

Access to safe water and adequate sanitation is a cornerstone of health, dignity, and sustainable development. Yet in many rural communities, these services remain limited, fragile, or poorly managed. This course equips professionals with the knowledge, tools, and strategies to design, implement, and sustain effective rural water and sanitation systems that improve lives and foster resilience.

Participants will explore both the technical and governance dimensions of rural water supply and sanitation, including infrastructure development, community engagement, and institutional strengthening. The course emphasizes integrated approaches that combine engineering solutions with social, cultural, and economic considerations.

A key focus is sustainability: ensuring that systems remain functional long after external support has ended. Case studies will highlight both successful and failed interventions, drawing lessons on financing, maintenance, capacity building, and the role of local ownership in ensuring long-term results.

The course also addresses the intersection between water, sanitation, and public health, with emphasis on hygiene promotion, behavior change, and reducing the burden of waterborne diseases. Participants will learn practical methodologies to design interventions that integrate WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) principles with wider rural development objectives.

Emerging issues such as climate change impacts on water resources, the adoption of low-cost innovative technologies, and the integration of renewable energy in rural water systems will be explored. The role of monitoring, digital solutions, and data-driven decision-making in strengthening WASH systems will also be emphasized.

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to develop resilient, inclusive, and community-centered rural water and sanitation programs that enhance health, economic productivity, and quality of life while contributing to the achievement of global sustainable development goals.
