Course Introduction

Rice is one of the most important staple crops globally, feeding more than half of the world’s population and playing a critical role in food security, rural livelihoods, and national economies. However, conventional rice production systems face increasing challenges including water scarcity, climate change impacts, soil degradation, rising production costs, and pest and disease pressures. Sustainable rice production systems are therefore essential to ensure long-term productivity, environmental protection, and economic viability. This training course equips participants with modern knowledge and practical skills to develop and manage sustainable rice farming systems.

The course introduces participants to the principles and practices of sustainable rice production, including site selection, land preparation, nursery establishment, transplanting techniques, and water-efficient cultivation methods such as System of Rice Intensification (SRI) and alternate wetting and drying (AWD) irrigation. Participants will explore how improved agronomic practices can significantly increase yields while reducing water usage, input costs, and environmental impacts.

A key focus of the course is soil fertility management and integrated nutrient management in rice systems. Participants will learn how to improve soil health through organic matter incorporation, balanced fertilization, green manuring, and precision nutrient application. The training emphasizes restoring soil productivity while minimizing chemical dependency and maintaining long-term ecological balance in rice-growing environments.

The course also covers pest, disease, and weed management strategies tailored for sustainable rice production systems. Participants will gain knowledge on integrated pest management (IPM), biological control methods, resistant varieties, and safe pesticide use. Weed control strategies including mechanical, cultural, and chemical approaches are also explored to ensure high productivity with reduced environmental harm.

Water management is a central component of sustainable rice production, and this course provides in-depth training on efficient irrigation systems and water-saving technologies. Participants will learn how to optimize water use through techniques such as alternate wetting and drying, laser land leveling, and efficient field drainage systems, ensuring resilience under changing climate conditions and water scarcity challenges.

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with technical and managerial skills to implement sustainable rice production systems that enhance productivity, reduce environmental impacts, and improve farmer livelihoods. They will be able to adopt climate-smart practices, improve resource efficiency, and contribute to sustainable food security systems.
