Introduction

The Sustainable Ocean and Fisheries Management Training Course provides professionals with the critical knowledge and tools to manage marine ecosystems responsibly and ensure the long-term sustainability of global fisheries. Oceans play a vital role in regulating the earth’s climate, supporting livelihoods, and providing food security to billions of people. Yet, overfishing, pollution, and climate change threaten these ecosystems at an alarming rate. This course is designed to strengthen institutional capacity and enhance technical competence in implementing sustainable ocean governance and fisheries management strategies.

Participants will explore the principles of ecosystem-based management and learn how to balance ecological integrity with socio-economic objectives. The course integrates modern scientific knowledge, innovative technologies, and traditional practices to guide decision-making and policy formulation that support healthy marine environments and productive fisheries.

A key focus of the training is on developing adaptive management approaches that promote responsible fishing practices, protect marine biodiversity, and maintain the resilience of coastal and ocean ecosystems. Through practical examples and case studies, participants will learn how to assess fish stocks, reduce bycatch, combat illegal fishing, and promote community-based fisheries governance.

The course also addresses the economic and policy dimensions of ocean management, including the role of blue economy principles, marine spatial planning, and sustainable aquaculture development. Participants will gain insights into how ocean resources can be used equitably and efficiently while reducing ecological footprints and ensuring fair benefit-sharing among stakeholders.

Emerging global frameworks such as the UN Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water), regional fisheries agreements, and marine conservation treaties will be explored to contextualize the governance of shared marine resources. By understanding these instruments, participants can align local actions with global sustainability targets.

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with the analytical, technical, and policy skills necessary to advance sustainable ocean and fisheries management. They will be prepared to design and implement effective strategies that preserve marine biodiversity, enhance food security, and contribute to resilient blue economies.
