Course Introduction

Groundwater plays an essential role in global water security, supporting drinking water supplies, irrigation, and industrial needs. However, over-extraction, pollution, and weak governance are threatening its sustainability. This course provides participants with comprehensive insights into the science, policy, and practice of sustainable groundwater management and aquifer protection.

Participants will explore the hydrological, geological, and ecological dimensions of groundwater systems, understanding how aquifers function and how they interact with surface water and ecosystems. Emphasis is placed on managing groundwater as a shared resource that must balance social, economic, and environmental objectives for long-term sustainability.

The training addresses governance structures, regulatory frameworks, and institutional arrangements that guide groundwater use and protection. Participants will learn how policy tools, stakeholder participation, and enforcement mechanisms can be leveraged to ensure equitable and sustainable resource utilization.

Through practical case studies and data-driven exercises, the course examines groundwater depletion, contamination, and climate-related challenges. Participants will gain skills in mapping, monitoring, modeling, and decision-making using modern digital tools and geospatial technologies.

Emerging issues such as the role of artificial recharge, nature-based solutions, and groundwater resilience under climate change are discussed. The course also highlights innovations in community-based groundwater management and integrated water resource management (IWRM) approaches.

By the end of the course, participants will have the technical and policy skills to design sustainable groundwater management strategies, develop aquifer protection programs, and strengthen institutional capacity to ensure groundwater resilience for future generations.
