Course Introduction

Groundwater remains one of the world's most valuable freshwater resources, supplying drinking water, agriculture, industry, and ecosystems across diverse climatic regions. Sustainable groundwater extraction requires careful planning, scientific assessment, efficient borehole design, responsible abstraction practices, and continuous monitoring to ensure aquifer longevity. This training equips participants with practical knowledge and technical competencies needed to develop, operate, and manage sustainable groundwater extraction systems while protecting groundwater resources for future generations.

Increasing urbanization, climate change, prolonged droughts, and rising water demand have intensified dependence on groundwater resources. Poorly managed borehole development, excessive abstraction, inadequate monitoring, and weak regulatory enforcement have contributed to declining groundwater levels, reduced water quality, and aquifer degradation in many regions. Participants will learn integrated approaches for balancing water demand with sustainable groundwater recharge while ensuring reliable water supply systems.

Modern groundwater development increasingly relies on hydrogeological investigations, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Global Positioning Systems (GPS), remote sensing, groundwater modeling, digital monitoring technologies, and smart pumping systems.
