Course Introduction

Rapid urbanization combined with climate change is reshaping the way cities plan, finance, and implement infrastructure systems. This course explores how sustainable cities can be financed through innovative green investment mechanisms that support low-carbon, resilient, and inclusive urban development pathways.

Participants will gain a deep understanding of urban climate finance systems, including public, private, and blended financing structures that enable sustainable infrastructure delivery. The course emphasizes practical approaches to mobilizing capital for green cities transformation.

The program examines how urban investments can be aligned with climate mitigation, adaptation, and sustainable development goals. It focuses on integrating climate risk considerations into urban planning and infrastructure financing decisions.

A strong emphasis is placed on green bonds, municipal finance tools, climate funds, and public-private partnerships that support sustainable urban development projects such as transport systems, energy-efficient housing, and smart infrastructure.

Participants will explore global case studies of cities successfully implementing green finance strategies, including low-carbon transport systems, climate-resilient housing, waste-to-energy systems, and sustainable water infrastructure investments.

By the end of the course, learners will be equipped with the skills to design, evaluate, and finance sustainable urban development projects that enhance resilience, reduce emissions, and improve quality of life in cities.
