Course Introduction

Survey data quality depends not only on sound sampling and questionnaire design but also on rigorous procedures for identifying, correcting, documenting, and evaluating problems after data collection. This course provides a comprehensive framework for cleaning survey datasets, constructing and adjusting survey weights, diagnosing nonresponse, and producing analysis-ready data while preserving the underlying design and methodological integrity of the study.

The course examines the full post-collection data preparation process, from initial data inspection and structural validation through missing-data assessment, range and consistency checks, duplicate detection, coding verification, outlier review, and documentation of cleaning decisions. Participants learn how to distinguish genuine observations from data-entry errors, processing anomalies, unusual but valid responses, and patterns that require further investigation before analytical treatment.

A major focus is placed on survey weighting as a mechanism for aligning sample data with the target population and correcting known differences in selection probabilities and response patterns. Participants explore base weights, design weights, unequal selection probabilities, nonresponse adjustments, calibration, post-stratification, raking, trimming, weight diagnostics, and effective sample size. Particular attention is given to understanding how weighting decisions influence estimates, variance, precision, and interpretation.

Nonresponse adjustment is addressed as both a statistical and operational issue. Participants examine unit and item nonresponse, response-rate measures, nonresponse patterns, weighting-class adjustments, response-propensity approaches, auxiliary information, imputation considerations, and sensitivity analysis. The course emphasizes that adjustment methods should be linked to the survey design, available auxiliary variables, assumptions about nonresponse mechanisms, and the intended population inference.

Participants will also learn how to integrate cleaning and weighting procedures into reproducible survey data-processing workflows. Topics include metadata management, variable and value-label verification, derivation rules, audit trails, version control, processing logs, automated quality checks, documentation of exclusions, and preservation of raw versus analysis-ready datasets. Practical approaches are presented for identifying changes that may affect estimates and for communicating methodological decisions transparently to analysts and stakeholders.

Emerging issues are incorporated throughout the programme, including real-time data-quality monitoring, machine-assisted anomaly detection, responsive survey operations, administrative-data integration, calibration using alternative data sources, small-area estimation considerations, adaptive weighting strategies, and reproducible statistical workflows. By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to develop defensible survey data-cleaning and adjustment procedures that improve analytical reliability while making assumptions, limitations, and methodological choices transparent.
