Course Introduction
Managing sub-grantee projects requires strong coordination between funding organizations, lead implementers, sub-grantees, project teams, beneficiaries, and other delivery partners. Effective oversight ensures that delegated resources are used responsibly, agreed activities are implemented as planned, project risks are controlled, and sub-grantees remain accountable for delivering measurable results in accordance with approved agreements and requirements.
This course provides a practical framework for managing the complete sub-grantee project lifecycle, from partner selection and onboarding through implementation, monitoring, financial oversight, performance management, reporting, corrective action, and closeout. Participants will learn how to translate sub-grant agreements and approved project plans into practical management systems that establish clear responsibilities, reporting expectations, controls, milestones, and performance standards.
Effective sub-grantee management requires more than reviewing reports. It involves understanding the operational context of each partner, assessing organizational capacity, establishing proportionate controls, monitoring implementation progress, verifying expenditure and results, and maintaining constructive relationships that support both accountability and delivery. The course therefore combines compliance-oriented oversight with practical approaches to partner support, communication, problem solving, and performance improvement.
Participants will examine financial management, procurement, risk management, internal controls, safeguarding, fraud prevention, documentation, monitoring and evaluation, and reporting requirements within sub-grantee arrangements. Particular attention will be given to identifying early warning indicators, investigating significant variances, addressing weak performance, managing corrective actions, and escalating serious issues without unnecessarily disrupting legitimate project delivery.
The course also explores the increasing complexity of sub-grant management, including remote monitoring, digital reporting, third-party implementation, localization, capacity constraints, data-quality risks, safeguarding expectations, cybersecurity, responsible data management, and the need for stronger evidence of development impact. Participants will consider how oversight systems can be adapted to different partner capacities while maintaining appropriate standards of accountability and assurance.
By the end of the course, participants will be better prepared to establish effective sub-grantee management frameworks, assess partner capacity, monitor implementation and financial performance, manage risks, strengthen reporting, and conduct meaningful oversight reviews. The programme equips professionals with practical tools for balancing compliance, partnership, capacity development, accountability, and results throughout the sub-grantee project lifecycle.
