Course Introduction

Strategic river basin and catchment management is essential for ensuring sustainable water allocation, ecosystem protection, and long-term resilience of freshwater resources. This course provides an advanced understanding of integrated basin planning approaches that balance environmental, social, and economic water demands.

The program introduces participants to the principles of hydrological cycle management, watershed dynamics, and basin-scale water governance frameworks. It emphasizes how river basins function as interconnected systems that require coordinated planning and management strategies.

Participants will explore integrated catchment management approaches that address land use impacts, water quality degradation, flood risks, and drought vulnerability. The course highlights ecosystem-based management practices that promote sustainability and resilience.

A strong focus is placed on governance structures, institutional coordination, and stakeholder engagement in river basin management. Learners will understand how policies and institutions influence water allocation, conservation, and transboundary water cooperation.

The course also examines emerging challenges such as climate change impacts, population growth, urbanization, and competing water demands. It provides analytical tools for adaptive basin planning and sustainable resource management.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to design and implement strategic river basin and catchment management plans that support integrated water resource sustainability and environmental protection.
