Course Introduction
Senior communication professionals are increasingly expected to operate as strategic counsellors rather than communication executors. Their value depends on their ability to interpret complex organisational issues, anticipate stakeholder reactions, challenge assumptions, advise leaders, and connect communication decisions with business priorities, organisational reputation, and long-term strategic outcomes.
This course develops the advanced counsel skills required to operate effectively at senior communication level. It examines how experienced practitioners can strengthen strategic judgement, commercial awareness, executive influence, critical thinking, stakeholder intelligence, and decision support while maintaining the independence and professional credibility expected of a trusted communication adviser.
Participants will explore practical approaches for diagnosing communication challenges, framing strategic choices, advising senior leaders, managing ambiguity, challenging decisions constructively, and translating complex information into concise recommendations. The programme moves beyond message development to examine the broader organisational, political, operational, reputational, and stakeholder context in which communication decisions are made.
The course also examines how artificial intelligence can enhance strategic counsel without replacing professional judgement. Participants will consider AI-assisted research, stakeholder intelligence, sentiment analysis, narrative analysis, predictive analytics, scenario modelling, generative AI, and automated monitoring as tools for improving advisory insight while addressing confidentiality, source reliability, bias, hallucinations, privacy, governance, and accountability.
Particular attention is given to the interpersonal dimensions of strategic counsel. Senior advisers must know when to support, when to challenge, when to simplify, when to escalate, and when to recommend that leaders take a different course of action. Participants will therefore practise influencing without authority, handling disagreement, communicating uncomfortable truths, and maintaining trusted relationships during difficult decisions.
By the end of the course, participants will have a practical framework for providing higher-value strategic counsel across executive communication, reputation, stakeholder engagement, organisational change, issues management, and crisis situations. The programme is designed to help experienced communication professionals become more influential, commercially aware, evidence-led, and confident advisers to senior leadership.
