Course Introduction

Strategic Communication Counsel for Boards and Senior Leadership Training Course develops the capability to advise boards, chief executives and senior leadership teams on communication as a strategic governance, reputation and organisational leadership discipline. The programme focuses on moving beyond message production towards high-value counsel that informs decisions, anticipates stakeholder reactions and strengthens leadership confidence.

The course examines how communication advisers can operate effectively in board and senior leadership environments where decisions often involve uncertainty, competing interests, regulatory considerations, reputational exposure and significant stakeholder consequences. Participants learn how to translate complex organisational issues into concise, decision-relevant communication intelligence.

Participants explore frameworks for executive and board advisory, including stakeholder analysis, reputation assessment, communication risk evaluation, strategic narrative development, scenario planning and decision communication. Emphasis is placed on providing candid, evidence-based counsel while maintaining professional independence, confidentiality and appropriate boundaries between advice and decision ownership.

The programme also considers the changing information environment in which boards and senior leaders now operate. Participants examine AI-enabled intelligence, media monitoring, sentiment analysis, emerging-issue detection, predictive analytics and generative AI for briefing preparation, while addressing source validation, privacy, bias, hallucinations, information integrity and responsible human oversight.

Particular attention is given to difficult advisory situations, including leadership transitions, organisational transformation, regulatory scrutiny, public controversy, crisis events, stakeholder pressure, investor concerns and contentious strategic decisions. Participants develop methods for challenging assumptions constructively, preparing leaders for difficult conversations and ensuring communication considerations are integrated into strategic decision-making.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to provide stronger strategic communication counsel to boards and senior leadership, build concise executive briefings, identify communication implications of strategic choices, anticipate stakeholder and reputation risks, and support high-quality leadership decisions. The programme ultimately strengthens the communication function as a trusted source of strategic intelligence and counsel.
