Course Introduction

The SQL for Financial Audit and Transaction Analysis Training Course equips financial auditors, internal auditors, forensic professionals, accountants, and assurance teams with practical SQL skills for querying, analyzing, validating, and investigating large volumes of financial and transactional data. The course connects database analysis with audit objectives, financial reporting assertions, control testing, substantive procedures, and evidence-based audit conclusions.

The program provides a structured introduction to SQL concepts from an auditor’s perspective, enabling participants to work confidently with relational databases and financial data structures. Participants will learn how to retrieve relevant populations, filter transactions, join datasets, aggregate financial information, identify exceptions, investigate relationships, and create repeatable queries that support financial audit and assurance procedures.

A significant focus is placed on analyzing general ledger transactions, journal entries, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, procurement, revenue, expenses, cash, inventory, fixed assets, and master data. Participants will use SQL to identify duplicates, missing records, unusual amounts, transaction sequences, unusual timing, inactive accounts, unexpected relationships, and other patterns that may require additional audit investigation.

The course also develops SQL techniques for audit assertions and substantive testing. Participants will learn how to use database queries to test completeness, accuracy, occurrence, existence, cut-off, classification, and consistency across financial populations. They will also examine how SQL can support reconciliations between systems, identify unmatched transactions, compare master data with transaction records, and investigate differences between the general ledger and supporting schedules.

Modern financial environments generate large datasets through ERP systems, cloud accounting platforms, digital payment systems, procurement applications, payroll platforms, and automated transaction-processing environments. The course therefore covers SQL-based analytics in technology-enabled audit environments, including data extraction, data quality, access controls, audit trails, automation, cybersecurity considerations, AI-assisted analysis, and the risks associated with incomplete or unreliable datasets.

Through practical exercises and audit case studies, participants will build and execute SQL queries to analyze realistic financial transaction populations and generate actionable audit insights. The course emphasizes professional skepticism, appropriate interpretation of query results, corroboration of exceptions with audit evidence, reproducibility, documentation, and the integration of SQL analytics with broader audit methodology.

Comprehensive Course Outline

Module 1: SQL for Financial Audit and Transaction Analysis Fundamentals

  • Understanding the role of SQL in modern financial auditing, assurance, forensic analysis, continuous auditing, and large-population transaction testing.

  • Examining relational databases, tables, records, fields, primary keys, foreign keys, relationships, and financial data structures from an auditor’s perspective.

  • Translating audit objectives, assertions, financial risks, and control objectives into SQL-based analytical questions and procedures.

  • Designing an audit analytics workflow covering data access, query development, population validation, exception identification, investigation, documentation, and conclusions.

Module 2: SQL Query Fundamentals for Auditors

  • Using SELECT statements, filtering conditions, sorting, aliases, expressions, and basic SQL syntax to retrieve relevant financial audit populations.

  • Applying WHERE conditions and logical operators to isolate transactions based on accounts, dates, amounts, users, departments, vendors, customers, and transaction types.

  • Using functions for dates, text, numbers, null values, and conditional logic to prepare financial data for audit analysis.

  • Building clear and reproducible SQL queries that allow auditors and reviewers to understand exactly how a transaction population was selected and analyzed.

Module 3: Financial Data Relationships and SQL Joins

  • Using INNER JOIN, LEFT JOIN, and other join techniques to connect general ledger transactions with account, vendor, customer, employee, procurement, and other master-data tables.

  • Analyzing relationships between invoices, purchase orders, receipts, payments, suppliers, customers, employees, and accounting records.

  • Identifying unmatched, missing, orphaned, or inconsistent records through systematic comparison of related financial datasets.

  • Validating join results and avoiding duplicate records, incorrect relationships, incomplete populations, and other errors that could distort audit conclusions.

Module 4: General Ledger and Journal Entry Analytics

  • Querying general ledger populations to identify unusual account activity, unexpected transaction concentrations, abnormal movements, and high-risk financial accounts.

  • Analyzing journal entries by amount, account combination, user, date, description, source, posting period, and other attributes relevant to audit risk.

  • Identifying period-end journals, manual adjustments, unusual postings, reversals, late entries, and transactions requiring additional substantive testing.

  • Linking SQL-generated exceptions to audit assertions, financial statement risks, supporting documentation, management explanations, and control procedures.

Module 5: SQL for Transaction Testing and Financial Assertions

  • Designing SQL tests for completeness and occurrence by comparing transaction populations with source records, control totals, supporting schedules, and expected activity.

  • Testing accuracy and classification through comparisons of transaction attributes, account codes, amounts, dates, departments, cost centers, and other relevant fields.

  • Applying SQL techniques to perform cut-off testing around reporting periods and identify transactions recorded in unexpected accounting periods.

  • Building population-based substantive tests for revenue, expenses, purchases, payments, receipts, payroll, inventory, fixed assets, and other significant financial areas.

Module 6: Reconciliations, Matching, and Exception Analysis

  • Using SQL to reconcile general ledger balances and transactions with accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank records, payroll systems, inventory records, and other supporting data.

  • Identifying unmatched transactions, timing differences, stale reconciling items, missing records, duplicate entries, and unexplained balance differences.

  • Applying aggregation and grouping techniques to compare financial populations by account, supplier, customer, employee, period, location, transaction type, and other dimensions.

  • Developing exception reports that prioritize significant differences and unusual transactions for further audit investigation and management follow-up.

Module 7: Fraud Detection and Advanced Transaction Analytics

  • Using SQL to identify duplicate payments, unusual suppliers, suspicious employee transactions, abnormal refunds, unusual expenses, and other potential fraud indicators.

  • Applying threshold analysis, round-number testing, transaction sequencing, unusual timing, frequency analysis, and outlier-focused queries to financial populations.

  • Analyzing relationships among employees, suppliers, customers, accounts, payment details, addresses, and other attributes to identify potentially unusual connections.

  • Evaluating SQL-generated fraud indicators using professional skepticism and corroborating exceptions with documentation, confirmations, interviews, and other audit evidence.
