Course Introduction

Spatial Statistics, Geostatistics and Predictive Mapping Training Course provides an advanced and practical understanding of statistical techniques used to analyse geographic data, identify spatial relationships, quantify geographic variability, and generate reliable predictive maps. The programme connects statistical theory with real-world geospatial applications across environmental, agricultural, urban, infrastructure, health, natural resource, and development contexts.

The course introduces the fundamental principles of spatial statistics and explains how geographic location influences observations and analytical results. Participants examine spatial dependence, spatial autocorrelation, spatial heterogeneity, clustering, geographic patterns, spatial outliers, and neighbourhood relationships while learning how these concepts differ from conventional statistical assumptions involving independently distributed observations.

A major component of the Spatial Statistics, Geostatistics and Predictive Mapping Training Course focuses on geostatistical methods for understanding and predicting continuously varying spatial phenomena. Participants explore concepts such as variograms, covariance functions, spatial continuity, stationarity, anisotropy, sampling design, and interpolation, developing the knowledge required to select appropriate methods for different geographic datasets and analytical objectives.

The programme progresses into predictive mapping, where participants learn how observed geographic data can be transformed into continuous prediction surfaces and decision-support products. Advanced interpolation techniques, including ordinary kriging, universal kriging, indicator kriging, co-kriging, regression-based approaches, and machine learning methods, are examined alongside methods for assessing prediction uncertainty and model reliability.

Participants also explore the integration of spatial statistics with GIS, remote sensing, environmental variables, terrain information, socioeconomic datasets, and machine learning. This enables the development of sophisticated spatial models for applications such as soil property estimation, rainfall mapping, pollution assessment, groundwater analysis, agricultural productivity, climate modelling, disease mapping, mineral exploration, and environmental risk assessment.

Emerging issues are incorporated throughout the programme, including spatial machine learning, GeoAI, big geospatial data, cloud-based geostatistics, spatiotemporal modelling, uncertainty quantification, automated predictive mapping, spatial foundation models, and reproducible geospatial analytics. The course also addresses practical challenges such as sampling bias, scale effects, spatial resolution, missing data, non-stationarity, model transferability, computational requirements, and responsible interpretation of predictive maps.
