Course Introduction

Urban areas are rapidly evolving as centers of innovation, governance, and socio-economic transformation. With increasing complexities in transportation, housing, environment, and service delivery, city managers and policymakers are seeking advanced methods to design sustainable solutions. Spatial data science has emerged as a powerful tool to understand urban systems, improve policy effectiveness, and foster innovation-driven growth.

This course introduces participants to the foundations and applications of spatial data science in urban innovation and policy design. It highlights the role of geospatial technologies, big data, artificial intelligence, and machine learning in tackling pressing urban challenges such as congestion, inequality, resilience, and resource management.

Through real-world urban case studies, participants will gain insights into how spatial analytics can transform data into actionable strategies. They will learn how geospatial intelligence supports evidence-based decision-making, policy evaluation, and the design of smarter, more inclusive cities.

The course also emphasizes the integration of spatial data with socio-economic, environmental, and administrative datasets. This enables participants to create holistic urban models that can inform sustainable development agendas, innovation ecosystems, and governance frameworks.

Emerging topics such as digital twins, smart governance, climate adaptation, and the use of geospatial data in urban entrepreneurship and technology policy will be covered. These themes prepare participants to address not just today’s urban issues but also the challenges of the future.

By combining theory with hands-on data science tools, learners will leave the course equipped with advanced skills to innovate urban solutions, shape policy agendas, and harness spatial intelligence for sustainable and resilient urban development.
