Course Introduction

Effective decision-making in today’s data-driven era requires robust access to spatial information that is interoperable, reliable, and sustainable. Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDIs) provide the institutional, technical, and governance frameworks necessary to make geospatial data accessible and useful for policymaking, planning, and public service delivery.

Policymakers across sectors are increasingly recognizing the importance of SDIs in enhancing transparency, improving collaboration, and fostering innovation in data-driven governance. By enabling interoperability between datasets, SDIs break down silos and support evidence-based policy solutions at local, national, and regional levels.

This course provides a comprehensive foundation in SDI development and governance, tailored specifically for policymakers and decision-makers. It integrates both the technical and institutional dimensions of SDIs, ensuring participants understand not only the systems but also the governance structures required for sustainability.

Participants will gain knowledge of global best practices in SDI design, implementation, and governance frameworks, while also exploring emerging trends such as open data, FAIR data principles, and data-sharing policies. The course emphasizes policy relevance, institutional arrangements, and multi-stakeholder collaboration.

Through a mix of lectures, case studies, and hands-on sessions, learners will explore how SDIs contribute to national development agendas, climate resilience, smart city governance, and international reporting commitments. Special focus will be given to aligning SDIs with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

By the end of the program, participants will be equipped with the skills and knowledge to lead or advise on the development, governance, and sustainability of SDIs in their own policy contexts, enabling more effective, inclusive, and data-informed governance.
