Course Introduction

Poverty reduction remains one of the most critical goals of social work practice globally, requiring integrated strategies that address both immediate needs and long-term livelihood development. This course provides a comprehensive understanding of how social workers can design and implement effective poverty reduction and livelihood support interventions in diverse community settings.

The program explores the multidimensional nature of poverty, including income deprivation, lack of access to education, poor health outcomes, unemployment, and social exclusion. Participants will examine how structural inequalities and systemic barriers perpetuate poverty and how social work interventions can break these cycles through targeted support systems.

Participants will gain practical skills in designing livelihood support programs such as vocational training, microfinance access, entrepreneurship development, and social protection schemes. The course emphasizes empowering individuals and communities to become self-reliant and economically resilient through sustainable interventions.

Special attention is given to community-based approaches that promote participation, inclusion, and local ownership of poverty reduction initiatives. Participants will learn how to engage communities in identifying needs, designing solutions, and implementing programs that reflect local realities and priorities.

The course also addresses emerging challenges such as urban poverty, youth unemployment, climate-related livelihood disruptions, and digital exclusion. It equips participants with adaptive strategies to respond to these evolving socio-economic conditions while promoting sustainable development outcomes.

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with advanced skills to design, implement, and evaluate poverty reduction and livelihood support programs that promote economic empowerment and social well-being in vulnerable populations.
