Course Introduction
Social workers frequently operate in environments shaped by tension, inequality, fractured relationships and community grievances, making conflict?resolution competencies essential for effective intervention. This course provides a deep, practice-oriented foundation that strengthens the analytical, interpersonal and systems-thinking skills required to navigate complex conflict landscapes.
In many societies, entrenched grievances, resource scarcity, identity-based divisions and weakened institutions contribute to recurring cycles of violence. This course guides participants in applying trauma-informed, culturally sensitive and rights-based approaches that interrupt these cycles and support pathways toward sustainable peace and community cohesion.
Learners explore advanced methodologies including conflict mapping, dialogue facilitation, restorative justice, and transitional engagement with individuals and groups affected by violence. By bridging theory with real-world application, the course equips participants with confidence to design effective, context-driven conflict interventions.
Participants also analyze how political, socioeconomic, cultural and institutional systems influence the emergence, escalation and de-escalation of conflict. This holistic perspective strengthens their ability to operate across multiple social layers—from family systems to national policy structures—while advocating for inclusive and accountable approaches.
Recognizing the complexity of modern conflicts, the course integrates emerging themes such as digital misinformation, online radicalization, climate-related tensions and evolving community vulnerabilities. Learners gain insight into how these new drivers interact with fragile contexts and how social work practice can foster resilience and prevent escalation.
By the end of the course, participants are equipped to mediate disputes, promote dialogue, support healing processes and mobilize communities toward sustainable peace. Through scenario-based learning, case analyses and collaborative exercises, the course prepares practitioners to strengthen social fabrics and contribute meaningfully to safer, more cohesive societies.
