Course Introduction

Aging populations are increasing globally, creating urgent demand for specialized social work services that address the physical, emotional, psychological, and social needs of older adults. This course provides a comprehensive foundation in gerontological social work practice, focusing on the delivery of compassionate, rights-based, and person-centered elderly care support services.

Participants will explore the biological, psychological, and social aspects of aging, including age-related changes, chronic health conditions, cognitive decline, and social isolation. The course emphasizes understanding aging not as a decline alone, but as a life stage requiring dignity, respect, and structured support systems.

The program highlights the role of social workers in elderly care settings such as nursing homes, assisted living facilities, community care programs, and home-based care services. Participants will learn how to assess needs, develop care plans, and coordinate services that enhance quality of life for older adults.

Special attention is given to family dynamics, caregiving challenges, and intergenerational relationships. The course explores how social workers can support caregivers while ensuring that elderly individuals receive adequate protection, emotional support, and access to essential services.

Emerging issues such as dementia care, elder abuse, loneliness, disability in aging, and end-of-life support are also addressed. Participants will gain practical strategies for managing complex cases while promoting autonomy, safety, and well-being among elderly populations.

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with advanced skills to deliver effective elderly care social work services, advocate for older persons’ rights, and contribute to the development of inclusive aging policies and community support systems.
