Course Introduction

Urban poverty and informal settlements present some of the most complex and rapidly evolving social challenges in contemporary development contexts. This course provides a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics of urban deprivation, focusing on the lived realities of individuals and families residing in informal settlements. It explores how social workers can design and implement effective interventions that address multidimensional poverty in densely populated urban environments.

Participants will examine the structural causes of urban poverty, including rapid urbanization, unemployment, inequality, housing shortages, and inadequate access to essential services. The course emphasizes the importance of understanding urban ecosystems where informal economies, fragile infrastructure, and social exclusion intersect. Learners will develop the ability to analyze these conditions and design context-specific social work responses.

The program highlights practical intervention strategies that social workers can apply in informal settlements, including community engagement, case management, advocacy, and service coordination. It emphasizes participatory approaches that empower residents to take an active role in identifying problems and developing sustainable solutions. Special attention is given to building trust in marginalized urban communities.

Social work practice in informal settlements requires strong collaboration with local authorities, NGOs, and community-based organizations. This course explores how multi-stakeholder partnerships can improve access to housing, healthcare, education, sanitation, and livelihood opportunities. Participants will learn how to navigate complex governance structures to enhance service delivery in underserved urban areas.

Emerging urban challenges such as climate change vulnerability, migration, youth unemployment, and digital exclusion are also addressed. The course equips participants with adaptive strategies to respond to these evolving issues while maintaining a focus on equity, dignity, and social justice. It prepares practitioners to work effectively in fast-changing urban environments.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to design, implement, and evaluate social work interventions that improve living conditions in informal settlements. They will gain the skills needed to promote inclusive urban development and contribute meaningfully to reducing urban poverty through sustainable and rights-based approaches.
