Course Introduction

Social services and case management generate large volumes of information about clients, households, service needs, referrals, interventions, outcomes, risks, and community conditions. Effective use of this information enables social service organizations to understand patterns of vulnerability, prioritize support, allocate resources, monitor caseloads, and improve the quality and timeliness of services. This course equips participants with practical data analytics capabilities for transforming social services data into actionable insights that strengthen case management and service delivery.

The course examines how social workers, case managers, programme officers, monitoring and evaluation teams, administrators, and managers can collect, organize, validate, analyze, and interpret data across the client service lifecycle. Participants explore client intake information, case histories, needs assessments, referrals, service utilization, follow-up records, closure data, and outcome indicators while learning how to identify incomplete, inconsistent, duplicated, or misleading information that can affect decisions and service quality.

Participants will develop practical skills in spreadsheet analysis, database concepts, dashboards, business intelligence, descriptive statistics, trend analysis, segmentation, and performance reporting. The course demonstrates how analytics can support caseload management, client profiling, service demand assessment, referral tracking, response-time monitoring, programme coverage analysis, and outcome measurement. Emphasis is placed on producing clear reports and visualizations that managers and frontline teams can use to understand operational pressures and make evidence-informed decisions.

The programme also addresses advanced analytics applications relevant to social protection and case management, including risk profiling, early-warning indicators, geographic analysis, predictive analytics, and service demand forecasting. Participants explore how artificial intelligence, automation, digital case management platforms, GIS, mobile data collection, and integrated information systems can strengthen social service operations while recognizing the risks of bias, inappropriate automation, exclusion, and poor-quality data. Practical attention is given to interpreting analytical outputs responsibly rather than treating models as substitutes for professional judgment.

Because social services data can contain highly sensitive personal and household information, the course gives substantial attention to data governance, privacy, confidentiality, cybersecurity, access controls, ethical data use, and responsible information sharing. Participants examine how analytical processes can protect client dignity while still enabling legitimate monitoring, coordination, reporting, and service improvement. The course also considers data minimization, secure storage, consent and lawful information use, role-based access, audit trails, and appropriate handling of sensitive case information.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to build practical analytical workflows that connect client-level information with programme and organizational performance. They will be better prepared to develop dashboards, analyze caseloads, identify service gaps, monitor referrals and outcomes, assess operational risks, and communicate findings to decision-makers. The course is designed to strengthen analytical confidence while ensuring that data remains a tool for improving human-centered social services, professional case management, accountability, and measurable outcomes.
