Course Introduction

Social protection systems play a vital role in reducing vulnerability and enhancing resilience among populations affected by humanitarian emergencies. This course provides a comprehensive understanding of how social protection mechanisms can be adapted and implemented in crisis contexts to ensure continuity of essential services and support for vulnerable groups.

The program explores the core components of social protection, including cash transfers, social safety nets, social insurance, and public works programs, and how these instruments can be rapidly scaled or adapted during emergencies such as conflicts, disasters, and displacement situations.

A key focus of the course is on integrating humanitarian response with national social protection systems. Participants will learn how to align emergency interventions with government-led frameworks to ensure sustainability, efficiency, and long-term impact for affected populations.

The course also examines targeting mechanisms and beneficiary identification processes in emergency settings, highlighting approaches that ensure equitable access to assistance while minimizing exclusion and inclusion errors among vulnerable populations.

Participants will engage with real-world case studies demonstrating how social protection systems have been used effectively during crises to support food security, livelihoods, health access, and basic income support for displaced and crisis-affected communities.

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with the knowledge and practical skills to design, implement, and strengthen social protection interventions that are responsive, inclusive, and resilient in humanitarian emergency contexts.
