Course Introduction

Social inequality is one of the most pressing challenges in global development, manifesting in disparities in wealth, health, education, and access to opportunities. These inequalities are not experienced uniformly but are shaped by intersecting factors such as gender, race, class, age, disability, and geography. To create sustainable and inclusive development, practitioners must understand how these dynamics interact.

This course provides a comprehensive exploration of the concept of intersectionality and its implications for addressing social inequality in diverse contexts. It equips participants with the theoretical foundations and practical approaches necessary to analyze and respond to the complex realities of marginalized communities.

Participants will examine how structural inequalities are embedded within social, political, and economic systems and how these systems reproduce exclusion. By critically engaging with real-world case studies, the course highlights the ways intersectional frameworks can inform more equitable and responsive development policies and practices.

Special focus will be given to the role of intersectionality in shaping experiences of vulnerability during humanitarian crises, migration, climate change, and conflict. These global challenges demand solutions that are sensitive to overlapping identities and power structures.

The course also explores strategies for mainstreaming intersectionality into development programming, ensuring inclusivity in research, policy design, and implementation. Participants will learn practical tools to enhance equity, representation, and accountability in their projects and organizations.

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to champion inclusive approaches that not only address inequality in isolation but also acknowledge the interconnected realities of communities, leading to more just, impactful, and sustainable development outcomes.
