Course Introduction

Social inclusion is a foundational principle of equitable development, ensuring that all individuals regardless of gender, disability, age, ethnicity, or socio-economic status can participate fully in social, economic, and political life. This course provides a comprehensive understanding of inclusion frameworks with a strong focus on disability and intersectionality in programming.

Despite global commitments to inclusion, marginalized groups continue to face systemic barriers that limit access to services, education, employment, and decision-making spaces. These barriers are often reinforced by intersecting identities such as disability, gender, poverty, and geography, which compound exclusion and vulnerability.

This course explores how intersectionality shapes lived experiences and development outcomes. Participants will examine how overlapping forms of discrimination interact and how inclusive programming can be designed to address multiple layers of disadvantage effectively.

A strong emphasis is placed on disability-inclusive development, including accessibility standards, universal design principles, and rights-based approaches. The course highlights practical tools for integrating disability inclusion across sectors such as education, health, governance, and humanitarian response.

Participants will also engage with policy frameworks such as the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and national inclusion strategies. The course bridges theory and practice to support real-world implementation.

By the end of the course, learners will be able to design, implement, and evaluate inclusive programs that address structural inequalities and promote equitable participation for persons with disabilities and other marginalized groups.
