Course Introduction

Social inclusion and disability rights programming is a critical component of equitable development, ensuring that persons with disabilities have equal access to opportunities, services, and participation in social, economic, and political life. Despite global progress, many systems still exclude or marginalize persons with disabilities through physical, institutional, and attitudinal barriers. This course provides a structured framework for advancing inclusive programming.

Disability rights are grounded in human rights principles that emphasize dignity, equality, accessibility, and non-discrimination. Governments, NGOs, and development organizations are increasingly required to design programs that actively remove barriers and promote participation. This course explores how disability inclusion can be effectively integrated into development planning and service delivery systems.

A key focus of the program is understanding the social, economic, and environmental barriers that limit participation for persons with disabilities. These include inaccessible infrastructure, limited access to education and employment, inadequate policy enforcement, and societal stigma. Participants will examine practical strategies for addressing these barriers through inclusive programming.
